Hi. I have a full time role and also have a hobby as an artist. I stock my art in a shop and whatever sells I am told what to invoice for minus the shop fees. I then email an invoice and the money is paid into my bank account an the end of each month.

They requested for me to get and ABN for this purpose which I did and is included in my invoice

I believe this makes me a sole trader and I need to somehow report this income as part of my tax return. I am also hoping that I can claim for materials that I have purchased for making my art.

I am hoping that someone that is in a similar position to me has done this before (this is my first time) and give me some guidance. It would be very much appreciated

Hi @Confused_Artist,

All of the income you earn as a sole trader can be reported on your individual tax return.

If you have records for the materials you've purchased, you may be able to claim deductions for these items on your return. Take a look at what you can claim on our website and see if you satisfy the 3 golden rules for claiming deductions.
