We do not need to claim GST refund / credits.

But in case of problems with the products and services they’ve sold us, would it be more difficult for us to chase the business if the tax invoice is invalid*? Does it even matter we don’t have a valid tax invoice?

*Invalid because the “invoice” they provided doesn’t say “Tax Invoice,” and it doesn’t show how much GST was paid or that it is GST-free. The word GST doesn’t even appear in it.

Hi @Mbb129,

This depends on whether the business is registered for GST. I'd recommend having a look at this page on how to invoice which explains what information needs to be present on an invoice (invoicing is different for GST and non-GST registered businesses).

If you aren't sure and think the invoice provided is incorrect, it would be a good idea to get in contact with the business and check. You can also ask them to reissue the invoice so it clearly states that GST hasn't been charged.

Even if you aren't claiming GST credits, it's still a good idea to make sure your tax records are all correct so that you don't run into any issues with your tax obligations in the future.
