Hi, I would like to ask about importation charges.

We are selling tools for woodworking online. Our business is based in Australia, but all the items are shipped from Japan to other countries.

One customer in NSW has recently made a purchase worth more than 1,000AUD. He has received a notice from Fedex that he has to pay some importation charges (Duty, Entry and GST) to release his parcel.

What we do not understand is what this GST is for. The customer has already paid 10% GST for the items on our online shop. If he pays this GST, would that be double taxation?

We have had some other customers in Australia before who made a purchase worth over 1,000AUD, but none of them were asked to pay these extra fees. The only difference is that we used DHL as a shipping company for the previous customers, and Fedex for the latest customer.  Do different shipping companies handle customs duties and other charges differently?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hisa

Hiya @HZ,

You can provide them with evidence that you charged GST at the point of sale so Border Force won't charge again. This will need to be addressed with them. We have some info about don't pay GST twice on our website.
