Hi everyone and ATO

I was a working holiday maker in 2021

During the financial year 2021-2022, when I was working as a kitchen hand employee in a restaurant, I decided to improve my skills. So I went to TAFE to study Certificate III in Commercial Cookery.

Can I claim all expenses (tuition, resources, material fees) on my 2022 income tax return ?

Hi @Equity,

You can claim self-education expenses if your study fulfils the following rules:

  • your study must maintain or improve the specific skills or knowledge you need to perform your current employment activities;
  • and/or is likely to result in an increase in your income from your current employment activities.

If you think your study fulfils either of these rules, then you're all good to claim your expenses!

You can have a look at the list of general course expenses you can claim on our website.
