Hello,

I'm confused about self-education expenses related to my professional year.

I have claimed $7350 for IT professional year fees as a self-education expense in this year return. I have filled the return myself. I had discussion with quite a few of my friends before lodging. After reading more online, I'm concerned and unsure whether my claim is right or wrong.

I did this professional year to improve my professional skills and know more about Australian workplace culture. It did help me in improving my skills and communication, i was able to find a new job with substantial raise while studying this course and I was also able to get more money in my current job. The issue is that how should i determine whether this is right or wrong. I did read online but no avail. I talked with an accountant earlier but he was also unsure. What should i do in this case of uncertainty and ensure that i'm properly complying with my tax responsibilities?

Initially I lodged my tax return without these self education expenses but based on discussion with my mates, i decided to amend it but now after doing a bit of online research i'm confused and worried. I also received a warning before amendment that my self-education expenses are quite higher based on my occupation.

What is the best way to approach this issue? Did anyone in the community has claimed fees for professional year?

Hi @mohan12,

The course fees are deductible if it meets the criteria listed under Self-education expenses - Eligibility to claim.

I can confirm, if the course relates to your employment at the time you were/are studying, and results in or likely to result in a pay increase, you can claim a deduction.

Though It's based on self-assessment so you'll need to make the determination.
