Hi ATO

Appreciate your reply in advance to my enquiries below

Q1. If a TFN applicant is on a temporary visa (sc500 Student Visa, etc), which of the following options should the applicant use on ATO website (https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/tax-file-number/apply-for-a-tfn/) ?

Q2. what is the difference between Option 1 and Option 2 listed below?

As far as I know, a student visa holder is also a Australian resident for tax purposes. Using Option 1 results in the applicant needing to visit Australian Post while, with Option 2, the applicant only need to apply online and wait for up to 28 days.

Option 1

Australian residents – TFN application

How Australian residents for tax purposes of all ages apply for a TFN, if you don't have an Australian passport.

Option 2

Foreign passport holders, permanent migrants and temporary visitors – TFN application

How visitors living in Australia with a valid foreign passport or travel document (visa) apply for a TFN.

Hi @Equity,

Yep, it's definitely a bit easier in some situations to use the second option - that's why it's there! As for your question, they'll be fine to use option 2 based on what you've mentioned. Being in Australia for a certain period of time won't stop them being able to use the second option.

Hi @Equity,

Great question! Which method the individual uses will depend on their situation and the documents they hold.

If they're an Australian tax resident they can look at using the first option if they'd like to. To do so, they'll need to make sure they have the appropriate documents. We have a page online with the list of usable documents. Being 16 years or older requires three documents with one being a primary. Under 16 years requires two documents instead, with one also being a primary.

In some situations individuals who've arrived in Australia would likely not have all of the required documents for the first option. This is where the second option allows them to apply for a TFN using their visa information.

At the end of the day each option is available for the individual, but they need to make sure they have the required documents for it. If they have everything needed they could choose either option.

Hi Ethan and ATO

I can surely see that using the Option 2 is much easier to apply for a TFN, as the Option 2 does not require the applicant to visit Australian Post.

Then can I just understand that, if someone lives in Australia on a temporary visa and with a valid foreign passport, they can choose the Option 2 regardless of how long they have stayed/lived in Australia?
