I'm a sole trader and require a second ABN for a special project I'm working on which isn't yet commercialised (making any money). I don't seem able to get one on the online application. Is there any way to obtain a second ABN?

Individuals can only ever have one sole trader ABN. You can conduct any number of businesses/activities under the same ABN, as long as they all operate under the same business structure (i.e. sole trader).
You'd only need to apply for a new ABN if it was being run under a different structure (i.e. partnership, company, or trust).
