Hi there,

I will be following my husband as a dependent on visa 482 as he is relocating to Australia for 2 years for work. I am currently working remotely for a US company in Malaysia. They have agreed to allow me to continue working remotely from Australia. I'm a bit fuzzy on the tax portion for things. I am currently a tax paying citizen in Malaysia. Would I still need to pay tax in Australia and declare my foreign income earned in Malaysia? My income will continue to be credited to my Malaysian account. Nothing changes from that perspective.

Thank you!

Hi @avk21,

When you come to Australia your residency for tax purposes may possibly change. Remember this is different to your immigration residency status. I recommend self-assessing your tax residency.

As a non-resident for tax purposes, you'll let us know about the Australian derived income you earn. This includes things like interest from an Australian bank and employment income.

If you become a resident for tax purposes you'll need to tell us about your worldwide income.

You'll report these amounts in your tax return.

If Australia has a tax treaty with countries you receive income from then this will tell you where your income is taxable. You might be eligible for the foreign income tax offset if you're taxed overseas. This can help reduce the amount of tax you pay twice.

Check out the information on our website where it talks about foreign and worldwide income, and tax treaties.

Happy travels!
