Hi, my spouse has just awarded a contract as IT consultant starting in mid of Jan 2023. He just arrived in Australia in early Jan with valid working rights, ie. Permanent Resident. However, ABN is required in order to sign the contract. In order to obtain the ABN, the TFN is required. He applied the TFN online but he does not have a sufficient supporting document. In addition to proof of opening a bank account, he needs the driver license which is on the way, hopefully to be arrived in 2 weeks time. It is noted that he does not have additional supporting documents as given we are living with my parents' house, we don't have any utilities' bills.

Is there any workaround in order to obtain the TFN such as a letter of exemption? Worry that if the ABN does not process on time, the contract will be expired and he needs to find another contract.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi @isahk88,

Did your spouse apply using Individual Auto Registration, (IAR)? This is a free service.

If so, if they've a valid visa from the Department of Home Affairs they won't need to send us more documentation.

We don't need proof of identity, (POI) documents if a valid TFN is provided on an ABN application.

If they were to apply for an ABN and TFN via the Australian Business Register, (ABR) we'll need POI documents.

Have a look at the information on our website where it talks about foreign passport holders, permanent migrants and temporary visitors - TFN application, and ABN for businesses outside Australia on the ABR website.
