Hi ATO,

If a rent a unit with a 2 bedroom and I use one bedroom exclusively for work (Home office, screens, desk, printers, etc) can i claim back proportionally as a tax deduction? (say a 3rd or half of the total area/rent?)

Im about to move to another unit and this will make the difference if I rent a studio/1 bedroom apartment or a 2 bedroom apartment.

I am currently an employee but we work 2 days from office 3 from home or can change to Sole Trader if its suits better.

Regards,

Alex

Hi @sweapon

On our website under Working from home expenses generally occupancy expenses such as rent are only claimable in limited circumstances.

You can view the criteria from the link I’ve provided under Occupancy expenses.

Where the employer offers an alternative place to work, you can only claim a deduction for the additional running expenses you incur because of working from home.

The link above will also give you the methods you can use to work out your eligible deductions or you can search on our community page under Office expenses and multiple threads will come up to help.

About the option of changing from employee to Sole trader we can only offer general advice, I would recommend you seek advise from your tax agent/accountant or financial advisor if that option would be right for you.
