I am a trainee paramedic, as part of my employment I am required to be enrolled in a paramedicine university degree. Completion of the degree will allow me to be registered and employed as a paramedic, which also increases my pay.
The degree is a commonwealth supported place (CSP), I am required to pay a student contribution amount for each subject and the rest of the amount is subsidised by the government. My employer will not be paying for the degree and it is expected that I pay for it myself.
I have previously read that tax deductions are not able to be claimed for CSPs:
Individuals cannot currently claim education and training expense deductions for student
contribution amounts towards CSPs. That is, those who receive a Commonwealth subsidy are not
eligible to claim tax deductions for the tuition expenses, even if paid upfront and in full, under
existing arrangements.

At the same time the following website states that for any cost incurred from formal training while undertaking a traineeship, a deduction can be claimed.
The difference here is apprenticeship/traineeship formal training is usually just a Tafe diploma and not a CSP university degree.
