I recently intended to voluntarily pay off my student loans but mistakenly sent the payment to a different ATO BPay reference. I already had an ATO BPay reference saved in my banking app which looked similar but was different to the ATO HECS BPay reference.


This is a large sum of money for me that I have been saving a long time for. Is there a way to get this payment returned to me?

Hi @GL181,


When it comes to making payments, there are a couple of things to consider.


Has the payment bounced back to your account? When you say it was the incorrect BPAY number, do you mean biller code or the reference number that was used? If it was the BPAY biller code, the amount may not be with the ATO.


If the wrong reference was used, we can have a look on our systems to track where the payment has gone. We generally need to allow 4 business days for the amount to show on our systems to locate the missing payment.
