What happens to my HECS debt when I die? I have paid some back when I had employment but have have been retired for some years (Now 75 years old)

I was under the impression that it was wiped except if you were still doing the course. For example I would only have to repay if I was enrolled in a course in the year I died and only for that particular year? It is very confusing. I would be grateful of any advice

Is it possible to talk to someone in person at a Melbourne office about it.

Hello @PJN,

The amount a deceased person owes is worked out up to the day they passed. When the final return is processed, we'll work out if a compulsory payment is required. Outstanding amounts after that are no longer pursued. Check out our response to a similar post.
