Hi, my employer withholds an amount from my pay every fortnight to cover compulsory student loan repayments. I can see my HECS balance from last year (after the last compulsory repayment was made) and have calculated that the amount withheld since then is enough to cover the outstanding balance.

Do I need to wait until tax time this year for the next compulsory repayment before I request that my employer stops withholding tax to cover loan repayments, or can I request that they stop now, knowing that the amount withheld in this financial year will be enough to close out the loan at tax time?

The other answers I read relating to this only seemed to indicate that you can request the employer stops withholding once the balance has been paid.

Thanks!

Hello @Sasha2468,

You'd let your employer know only when you no longer have a loan. You'd do this by completing a withholding declaration. When you complete that form you're advising the info is true and correct. If you provide false or misleading info you can be penalised under tax law. So when your loan is paid in full let your employer know so they can stop withholding extra tax.

Thanks Teddy. So does that mean I have to wait until after my tax return is submitted, and then the amount they continue to withhold unnecessarily will have to wait until the following tax time to be refunded because it will take a few weeks for the balance to update (it updated mid-July last time)?
