Hi, I was born in Ireland but moved to Australia in 2011 and have since received Australian citizenship.

I am relocating back to Ireland this year and will continued to work for my Australian employer remotely. Will I be taxed as a non-resident as I will be living abroad or will I continue to be taxed as a resident as I am an Australian citizen working for an Australian company in a country that has a tax treaty with Australia.

(i.e. Will I be taxed as a non-resident at 32.5c on every dollar, or will I receive the tax free threshold and be taxed a percentage of my income?)

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Andykeooo,

If you're leaving Australia, you will need to work out your tax residency. We have a few residency tests you can use to work out if you'll still be an Australian resident or change to a non-resident.

You should then look to the tax treaty for guidance on where tax will need to be paid. Your employer, although Australian may not have withholding obligations here if you're not a tax resident. They might need to pay to your residency country.
