Hi All,


Sincere apologies if this has been answered already, as I was unable to find the specific response.


I wanted to start a drop shipping website but the registered domain name (for instance, is "xyz") and the registered Business name with ASIC is "abc", my question is that are we allowed to conduct business that way on that website even though the names don't match. Considering I will be sending in invoices for the people that will buy from my website so the name will show on invoices as "xyz" and not "abc", it that not allowed/illegal?

Just a note, I have registered both ABN and Business name under sole Trader.

We no longer administer registered business names, this moved over to ASIC in 2012.


Unregistered business names use to be referred to as a Trading name, anyone could use the same name as there was no legal rights until such a time someone registered it as a business name.   


You can have as many register business names as you like under the one ABN and this helps customers find, identity and connect with your business.


You will need to discuss with ASIC if unregistered business names can still be used and what implications this may have to your business.
