Your income tax account in the ATO runs similar to a bank statement. If you make a payment it will come in as a credit and will offset against any debt you have on the account. When you have a debt raised the account balance will go into credit or debit depending on the amounts you have in the account. When making payments to us, we suggest going through the official links on our website or on ATO Online Services. Also the use of gift cards is not one of the ways available to pay the ATO and is widely used in attempts to scam money from taxpayers.
