Hi, I am a sole trader providing mental health therapy to others. I am needing to access own therapy due to vicarious trauma. In the past, I have worked in government organizations where there is team support so never needed this. I need to have my own therapy to process the vicarious trauma of my workplace so that I can continue to provide effective therapy to my clients. Is this tax deductible as clearly triggered by my work conditions and required to maintain my work? As a sole trader I don't have access to free employment assisted therapy that I could access for this or personal issues in most mental health government and non-government agencies. Thanks

Hi @Jen2023

Unfortunately, as a sole trader you’re not able to claim the cost of medical expenses for work related injuries, this would include vicarious trauma.

A sole traders would generally take out appropriate business insurance to protect themselves. The insurance premiums would be a business related expense you could claim a deduction for.
