When i try to link my ATO I got an issue on my bank details, can anyone help me go through this?
Hello @Grgrabin,
This error usually comes up when the bank details on our records don't match what you're entering.
There are a few possible reasons for this:
- you've used a tax agent in the past who put their agencies bank details on the record
- you're new to the tax system and we don't have any bank details on record yet.
You can check out the update your financial institution details page to see your options to get them changed to your correct information.
If your bank details don't work, see if you can use one of the other linking options.

@TeddyATO thanks a lot for your reply to Prabin. I have the same issue and i didnt go through any agent. The only problem is that the system is totally circular: you need to share supposedly right information about yourself to connect ATO and MyGov that is to say to access ATO/do anything there.
Then I put my superannuation fund (hostplus) and my account with CBA (I only have 1 superannuation fund and 1 bank with 1 account), it tells me details do not match ATO records...Considering I shared my bank statement to get my TFN (and considering I reported my TFN to Hostplus now more than 2 months ago), I dont see what other records the ATO has...
I guess it is possible ATO has 0 records, but then I cant do anything about it because to update/inform about my personal information/financial institution, I need to have access to ATO, which requires the ATO to recognize my personal information...
So it is an absurd loop where no progress can happen, and when one calls there is at least 50 minutes of waiting time without any guarantee that the person there can actually help...That is unfortunately the current situation for many of us...
Do you have any insights? FYI most companies/administrations around the world have customer support/chat/email address where people can send messages and get help, obliging people to stand in never ending phone lines as the only option to maybe one day get support is really suprising...
Thanks a lot for your kind help,
Jean
To be fair once i managed to speak with someone he was very helpful and though the linking code it worked well.
That said, it would be great to inform new people getting their TFN that they cannot do it online by definition (as ATO doesnt have any data saved in their system apparently in spite of receiving it for the TFN application) and should directly call for help (that would save many people a lot of time:).
Cheers,
Hi @Jean1234,
It's great you were able to sort out your access!
We don't get information like your bank or super details from your TFN application, and we need to keep your ATO account as safe as possible which is why we ask you to verify yourself.
If you fail the 2 questions you're prompted to contact us for a linking code. 😊
"The other reason is that you are new to the tax system and we don't have any bank details on record yet."
How do you link my account without having any of this information? Any possibility online? I called a few times today, but everytime it says "We are busy, try another time".... slightly frustrating as I can not do my tax return.
Hey @powerpaul,
If you haven't lodged a tax return with us before, you won't be able to set the link up yourself.
This is because without a tax return, we don't have any details to use to verify you. Instead you'll need to speak with us directly for a linking code or lodge another way.
After your return has been processed it'll be much easier to link your account online yourself.
