I work overseas and have private health insurance there, I have a HELP debt, and I am not presently a tax resident. My wife lives and works in Australia. My wife is going to get private health insurance to avoid paying the medicare levy surcharge. She will get private health insurance, the question is does she need to pay for me to get health insurance, so that I do not pay this surcharge also, when I lodge and presumably may something towards my HELP? What things do I need to worry about / not worry about when lodging as a foreign tax resident with a HELP debt?

What exactly do I lodge? The tax year where I live ends December 31 and I have only earned a relatively small amount to that date (which I lodged in my residing country). What amount do I lodge for my income in Australia, do I need to add the last 6 months of income.

Hi @Vlad

How long have you been a foreign resident for? If you've been a foreign resident for the full financial year, you'll be exempt from medicare levy. When you're exempt from medicare levy you'll be exempt from paying the medicare levy surcharge. There's no need to purchase private health if you're exempt that way.

If you weren't a foreign resident for the whole year, then there's a chance you'll pay MLS if you didn't have private hospital cover and your family income is more than the threshold.

When you left Australia did you submit an overseas travel notification to us? Individuals with student loans have to let us know when they go overseas.

You need report your worldwide income to us. This is the income you for the Australian financial year (1 July to 30 June). Depending on how much your income was will depend on what you submit to us. Everything can all be done via our online services. Firstly, I'll get you to read through the info on our website about overseas repayments. Let us know from there if you have specific questions.
