Hi I am a foreigner trying to apply for TFN online here, but after I entered my individual details it says:


"error

TFN application or enquiry currently unavailable

Try again later. Alternatively, if this message continues to display, download the TFN application or enquiryOpens in a new window

 form and mail it to the address provided on the application. Using the paper form however may result in delayed processing timeframes compared to the online option."

I see multiple posts regarding the same problem and ATO responded the issues were fixed, yet it still occurs to me.


I need a TFN for my bank as they said my interest income would be charged a higher tax rate without it. Application by paper form is not appropriate for me as I am traveling and not be able to receive the TFN number by the paper form in time.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble with your TFN application! Some other users have been experiencing this error at the moment too. This issue is usually do to a connection issue with Home Affairs, so the application isn't able to connect with them to verify your passport and check your Visa type. We aren't able to provide a timeframe for when it'll be fixed because the error isn't on our side, however these errors are usually resolved within a few days. You might just need to try again in a few days time.
