Hello. This is my first financial year earning full time income and I am earning above the threshold for HECS repayments. When i began this job last September I ticked the HECS box on my tax file declaration form.

However on my payslip, although tax is being deducted it doesn't say that there is an additional amount being witheld to pay for my HECS deductions? i have brought this up with my employed multiple times, however I still haven't seen a change on my payslips? When I have checked my HECS info via mygov it says that there is pending transactions which may affect the final balance? I am unsure what this means and I am very confused.

Hi @Etrotman

Your employer withholds the extra amounts to cover your compulsory repayment as PAYG withholding. This isn't recorded as a HECS payment, unless your employer does your payslips like that. When they pay it to us though, its just PAYGW.

When you lodge your return, we'll work out what your compulsory repayment is. This is part of your tax liability that you owe on the income you made. We'll work what this is, apply the tax your employer withheld and if you have any amounts left over you'll get a refund. As soon as your return has been processed, you'll see your compulsory repayment if you had to make one on your HELP loan.

We have an article about paying HECS/HELP that might be easier to understand how it works.
