Hey there ato community I logged into my ato online account today to check the status of my tax return and it now says that my tax return has been cancelled I don't understand this as my tax return was processed on July 7th and had an effective date of July 14th and was under balancing account status and now its been cancelled and is under the status of processing??? Anyone know what's happened and if I'll be getting a tax refund at all !?

Hello everyone!

@Gizzy222 @Spezza @Locke90 @TaxNoob2023 @Returnmytax @Ajk72 @SARMA @Jessegirl123 @romanzxzz @pineapplemoney

There’s a lot of activity here which is great, but I’m just jumping in to clarify what’s going on:

  • As @EmilyATO said, a ‘cancelled’ status doesn’t mean your return as been cancelled – it just means we’re reviewing it. You can check out our article that explains what each status on your return means.
  • Like all of you, there's tonnes of Aussies lodging right now. While our staff are working really hard to get refunds out quickly, your return can take 2-4 weeks after lodging online. Keep in mind... it's only been 13 days since Tax Time started.
  • Seeing $0? That might mean you still owe a bit of tax. Remember, the low and middle income tax offset (otherwise known as LMITO or lamington) isn't a thing this year, which basically means you may end up with a bill or your refund is lower than expected.

Keep chatting amongst yourselves - we'll pop back in if you need anything else answered!

Hey Mate.

I have the same issue. Logged in now to check and the ATO have cancelled the return after it was in balancing from the 7th. Maybe it might resort back in the next few days. Was counting on the refund by this Friday.

Hi again @Locke90

You've got a fair few threads going on this one! I can see there's a few community members in the same boat, but let me try explain.

If your return's status is showing as 'cancelled' - it's not a bad thing! The standard timeframe for a refund to process is 2-4 weeks (if you've lodged digitally).

A ‘cancelled’ status on your return means we’re reviewing it, and at times we need to manually add information in that's missing. This is why we try encourage people to wait until late July, when all that info is generally pre filled.

You'll get a refund if you’re entitled to one. I really encourage everyone on the thread to hop onto the ATO app! That way you can keep watch of your return as it's statuses change while you're on the go. If you're unsure what they mean, jump back here and let us know!

Same, mine has gone from balancing to processing then cancelled, effective date the 14th July, this morning went on the ATO app not My gov and it has changed the effective date to 2nd August with extra processing time. This has never happened before. Has anyone else had any updates ? Could it be that it wasn’t tax ready ?

Hi everyone, I thought I'd update here. My tax account moved back to Balancing with a reduction on my expected refund. It looks like the paid parental leave that my wife transferred to me last year was not pre-populated in my lodgment and because I don't always have this on a year to year basis, I didn't realise I have left it blank. Looks like the system found the match with Centrelink and corrected my return. My new effective date is now 19th of July.

Here to say just because it says "Cancelled" doesn't mean it actually is. They are indeed performing checks against other government bodies - making sure we don't pay a debt later on. Keep an eye on your returns, might change in the next day or so.

Mine just updated too. Less than what it originally was and new effective date 20 July. So hang in there and just keep checking

Yes mine is now balancing with a huge deduction in the return amount. New effective date is the 20th July. Can’t seem to see what was incorrect but will wait for the assessment notice. Hopefully everyone has a new update by now on their app.

@Jessegirl123

My original lodgement that I processed on the 7th July has gone from balancing account - Effective on the 14 July to

Processed 10th July - Cancellation of Tax return - Effective on the 14 July.... to

Processed 13th July - back to balancing account - Effective on 20th July....

with $900 less then what my original lodgement was.

Its obviously happening to a lot of people... something doesn't seem right at all.

Mine processed 7th and effective date 14th also. Received text on 12th saying funds will be lodged in the next 3 business days. ATO app changed on the 14th to funds have been transferred to my nominated account. Received my NOA there and as an email in MyGov and account says issued. Then 17th mine changed to Cancellation of refund. Checked with the bank and no money there being processed. It is still saying CR of the amount at this stage but no change from cancellation still.
