Hi all,

So I'm trying to do my tax return through the myTax app but I'm very confused by the statements made in various sections of the app, especially this screenshot taken from the final step.

According to that, I can't claim working from home expenses unless I have salary/wages income. But according to the ATO website and pretty much everyone that I've talked to about this, sole traders earning PSI are able to claim those expenses as well.

So what gives?! Is this just another stuff up by the app developers? Or is everyone I've talked to about this rorting the system?

MTIA for any advice given :-)

Hi @ITConsultant83

You can claim your eligible expenses for working from home. It sounds like you're in the deductions section for employees. If you earn PSI then you'd work out your deductions and enter them in the deductions label in the PSI section. This page shows you how to personalise your tax return to enable that section.

Is it possible to claim deductions via the "Fixed rate method - 67 cents" for PSI as a sole contractor working remotely?

E.g. I contract to a company with an office in Melbourne, and I work from Perth as a sole contractor, paid via invoices as PSI. Can each hour billed be counted under the fixed rate method in deductions?

This page (https://www.ato.gov.au/Business/Personal-services-income/What-to-do-when-the-PSI-rules-apply/Claiming-deductions-when-receiving-PSI/) includes:

"running expenses for a home office – for example, heating and lighting (but not rent, mortgage interest, rates or land taxes)" but does not specify how it can be calculated.
