I asked for $20/wk to be taken from my wage & put in as extra tax, which my pay slips have it down as, should I not get this extra I’ve put in back??
Hi @Kraken13,
All of the tax withheld by your employer through the year goes towards covering your yearly tax liability.
If you've paid more than that liability, then you'd be refunded the amount you've overpaid.

I thought so, but when I did my return yesterday it did not come back with the extra amount I paid!! When I rang the Tax Office I was told I had to ‘claim’ it in another form with ‘proof’ I’ve paid extra!! I have no government/study debt, never have, so the almost $1000 I paid I was expecting to get back, as well as some of my union fees, yet the calculation came up with a refund of just over $100……?!?!?
I assume the ATO did not provide further information regarding how and where you can “claim” any extra paid from your net pay?
A relative made voluntary payments of $200/week and this shows on his payslip as “Extra Tax”. There doesn’t appear to be a section on the tax return form on “extra tax” payments. Unless it’s a separate form?
Thanks,
Amy
