Hi Everyone,

On 19/4/23 I submitted a Notification of Death form (for my mother) at my local post office. I have still not received an acknowledgment of this form from the ATO. I rang the ATO last week, but the lady I spoke to said I just need to wait, as it can take 28 days for the ATO to process paper forms. However it has been 3 months since I submitted the form (well over 28 days).

As executor of my mother's will I need a TFN for the estate, so I mailed an Application for Deceased Estate form to the ATO on 15/6, but have similarly received no response from the ATO.

Phoning the ATO seems pointless, as the people on the help desk don't seem to be able to access the relevant IT systems to track the progress of my application. Can anyone suggest a way for me to find out what's happening with my application?

Hi @jacksprat,

We offer our condolences on the passing of your Mum.

This situation would be impacting you deeply so we will do our best to give the you the best advice to get this matter sorted in a timely manner.

When you lodged the notification, what details did you use? Your TFN and name, or did you use your mothers name on the initial page? This info will assist in locating which record the system has uploaded the notification to.

When you call are you advising the team that you want confirmation that the notification has been received or are you requesting your Mums TFN? Best thing to request is if the confirmation of notification has been received. It will either be on your record or your mums.

We are able to conduct searches on both records to allocate the notification. From there if the agent is able to action a Deceased notification, you can ask that they do that while you are on the phone with them. If all the required information and supporting evidence is received, they can add you as the authorised contact on your mothers record which enables you to receive their TFN over the phone.

I'm really sorry you've tried to get this sorted multiple times. If you speak with us again you can ask the agent how you can get this escalated.

All the best.
