does anyone know if i can still claim a tax free threshold from a job i already quit. I had no idea about claiming anything tax free so I might have messed it all up
Hi @Lukem234,
Claiming the tax-free threshold ($18,200) reduces the amount of tax withheld from your income. You can usually claim the tax-free threshold on the first $18,200 of income you earn in the income year.
So if you didn't claim the tax-free threshold and you had too much tax withheld from your pay you'll get that amount back in the form of a refund when you lodge your tax return.
You can't claim the tax-free threshold from a job you already left, but for future reference when you start a new job you'll be asked to fill out the TFN declaration form by your employer, and on there you can choose that you'd like to claim the tax-free threshold. You can also use the withholding declaration if you want to start or stop claiming the threshold with an existing employer.

Thank you so just to confirm its to late to do that because I already logged my return and now I owe money that i probably shouldn't
Hi @Lukem234,
If you've had too much tax withheld during the financial year because you didn't claim the tax free threshold, when you lodge your return, you'll get the excess back as a refund.
Let's say once we've completed processing your tax return your notice of assessment has a debt, this means you didn't have enough tax withheld during the financial year.
