Hi, I am on Visa 485 with Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC). I recently lodged my PR application and received my interim medicare card.


Timeline as follows:


- Medicare Entitlement Statement: Not eligible for Medicare from July 1, 2022 to April 28, 2023.


- Medicare Enrollment Date: May 1, 2023.


- Interim Medicare Card and Lifetime Health Cover letter received by mail on June 29, 2023.


As I received and got confirmation for my Interim Medicare on the 29th of June 2023 only, will the Medicare Levy Surchage apply or can be waived for the period April 29, 2023 to Jun 29, 2023?


I have not transitioned to a private health cover yet during this period to ensure I comply with my Visa 485 requirements while waiting to hear back from Medicare.

Generally, you will pay medicare levy, you may have to pay the Medicare levy surcharge (MLS) if both the following applies:


  • you, your spouse, and your dependent children do not have an appropriate level of private patient hospital cover
  • you earn above a certain income

The MLS is an amount you pay on top of the Medicare levy.
