When invoicing you just need to identify yourself, and as a sole trader you can use either your business or legal name to do this. We have some examples of what to include on tax invoices on our website.

The blog pages on the ATO website are reasonably clear.
I also give you the answer to the question that is frequently asked, and which ATO ignores.
"Do your Tax Invoices need to be numbered ?"
The answer is No.
Maybe oneday ATO bloggers will update QC 22438.
