I have done a spreadsheet for the whole financial year which shows my business kilometers and my private kilometers. Can I claim mobile phone charges with my carrier against the business percentage of my kilometers only? For example if I pay $20 every month for my mobile usage/calls n a year that is $240. If my business percentage was only 50% then can I claim $120 as other deductions for my mobile usage during Uber eats? I am doing cents per kilometer method however since mobile is not a car expense it is separate expense I can put in the other deductions box? Also can I still use cents per kilometer method and claim maximum of 5000km even though I did more km business wise?
Hi @al123456,
To claim mobile phone calls, you must meet all the following conditions:
- you must incur the cost and make the phone calls to perform your work duties
- You must have a record of your expenses showing how you calculated your work related phone calls.
You can only claim the work-related of your expenses as a deduction.
You cannot use the business percentage you have calculated based on your kilometres for your mobile. As your mobile calls is a separate item to claim.
You would need to do similar thing tally up or compile a spreadsheet as what your business calls were v's private calls. Then work out your business percentage. You can claim the mobile expense under the other work-related expense.
Under the cents per kilometre method, you're right the maximum that you can claim is 5,000km work-related.
If you are wanting to claim above 5,000km you may be eligible to use the alternative logbook method instead of the cent per kilometre method.
You can read in detail about the logbook method on our website to see if you're eligible.
