Hi all,

Is my understanding correct that the private health insurance rebate is based on the combined household income?

I was filling out my tax return and noticed that if I opt to have my spouse claim my share of the rebate (claim code E), my return is actually higher as my salary was higher this year compared to what the health insurance provider was expecting (so if I had "claimed" the rebate, I would have actually had to pay money).

My assumption is though that if I do this, my spouse will have to submit a tax return and indicate that she is claiming my share of the rebate (which is actually a debt) and that she will need to pay exactly what I would have had to, even if she had no income?

It just seems a bit odd that private health insurance rebates are based on the combined family income whereas most aspects of the tax return treat everyone as an individual.

Many thanks for the clarification!

Sure is based on household income. So either you have to pay the entire amount, your wife pays the entire amount or you pay 5050. If your wife doesnt have to lodge a return suggest you just put it through yours...
