Hello,

I have been trying to find a solid answer on this online and am yet to find one.

question is..

for hecs debt/ student loan repayments

if you renounce your citizenship (in the case of you pick up a new citizenship in a country that does not allow dual citizenship).

does the ato require the outstanding balance to be paid in a lump sum or do the same conditions apply, reporting world wide income and paying a percentage like normal based off said income.

thanks in advance :)

Hello there @xx_Billy_xx,

No, you won't need to pay the HECS debt off in a lump sum.

If you plan to live or work overseas and have a study or training support loan you will need to:

  1. Update your details and submit an Overseas travel notification. This must be done within 7 days of leaving Australia if you intend to be overseas for more than 183 days.
  2. Lodge your worldwide income or a non-lodgement advice. This is done during tax time each year.

Consider linking your Mygov to ATO online and set up the MyGov code generator app before you leave. This will make the online services easier to access from outside of Australia.
