I’m hoping someone may be able to help me figure out if I am a resident for tax purposes for when I file my next tax return

I am a UK citizen currently in my second year Working Holiday Visa 417

I first came to Australia in December 2024 and travelled and worked for a while before going back to the UK and coming back out to Australia in August 2025

Since my re entry I have stayed in the same city, not travelled either in Australia or out of Australia and maintained a lease in a house 6 months and intent to stay in this place for the foreseeable. I own a vehicle and I have worked 2 jobs before settling in a Government Department role. It is my intention to make Australia my permanent home and see this job as a lifelong career

I am part of a community club and also have an Australian partner, and my only sibling also lives in Australia.

Based on these factors, will I be classed as a resident or non resident for tax purposes for the next period?

Maybe. It would be best to see a tax agent or get a private ruling from ATO

I think it's likely you are Australian tax resident, even though you are on Working Holiday. Normally, Working holiday makers are usually considered foreign tax resident even if a residency test is satisfied. UK is on the list of NDA countries so can be considered Australian tax resident if one of the residency tests is satisfied.

May help to read Taxation of Australian resident WHMs from NDA countries

Hey @SugarL,

We've answered a similar post last year about working out residency status for tax purposes. It has a link to our article about working out your tax residency and what it means for you.

Within the article itself it has more useful links and info that can help guide you when determining your residency status. If you're still unsure, @YellowPotato is definitely correct when saying it may be easier to visit a tax agent when lodging your tax return/s.
