Hi all,

i’m just about to purchase a pair of meta glasses. These will not only help me see while I’m out of the community but it will also benefit my work as an administration officer in a medical setting by using them as assistive technology to help me read the screen and potentially use the meta component as a screen reader.

I’d like to know, are these tax deductible? In this case, it would be 50-50 (50% for Work and 50% for private)

Hi @jrb1987,

No, you can't claim a deduction for prescription glasses or contact lenses as these are private expenses, even when you wear them at work. The same principal applies to Meta glasses used for vision correction.

For the technology features of the Meta glasses (such as screen reading functionality), you need to consider if these features are essential for your employment duties. If your employer hasn't provided you with the necessary assistive technology and you require these features to perform your work, you may be able to claim the work-related portion of the cost. Make sure to keep evidence showing how the work-related portion is calculated.
