Hi Community,

I had a tax debt which I paid using BPAY. Unfortunately I paid using an old CRN - I didn’t realise they change. My bank can’t reverse the charge. I have now paid using the correct CRN. How can I have the first payment (made using the incorrect CRN) refunded by the ATO?

(I’m currently overseas and can’t call the ATO hotline).

Thanks, Jo

Hi @Josimp,

Your payment made using the incorrect customer reference number (CRN) will still be credited to your ATO account once we receive and process it. The CRN is now called a payment reference number (PRN), and using an old one can cause delays in allocating the payment, but the funds won't be lost.

Give the payment a few business days to process and then call our lodge and pay line to find out about getting the payment refunded.

Thanks for the information. It’s hard for me to call as I’m travelling overseas for several months. Is there no online form to request a refund?
