Hi, I’m on a Subclass 500 visa and have three interrelated automotive courses on my visa (Cert III, Cert IV, and Diploma). I’ve been working as a mechanic for a year as a part-timer while studying Cert III and I’ve now secured a better-paying job, still as a mechanic. From what I understand from other discussions, my Cert III is not tax deductible. However, I believe that Cert IV and the Diploma (diagnostics related) may be deductible, as they have helped me improve my skills and secure a better job as a mechanic. Appreciate if someone could help verify if I understand this correctly.

Hi @Apostolmayer,

You can't claim a deduction for your Cert IV or Diploma courses if they're being used to get a new job or secure better employment. Based on what you've described, these courses helped you secure a better-paying job as a mechanic, which means they relate to getting new employment rather than maintaining or improving skills for your current role at the time you incurred the expenses.

To claim a deduction for self-education expenses, you must show there's a close connection between the course and your work activities at the time you incur the expenses. You can claim if either:

  • the course maintained or improved a skill or specific knowledge required for your then current work activities, or
  • you could show that the course was leading to, or was likely to lead to, increased income from your then current work activities.
