I arrived in Australia from the UK in December 2024, but didn't get enrolled in Medicare until late 2025 (i.e. outside the same financial year).
Am looking to understand whether payment of the levy in my 2024-25 tax return is required? i.e is eligibility to receive Medicare dictated by time of enrolment, or by when you were first *eligible* to apply?
Tax agent suggests since I was not eligible or able to access Medicare during 24/25 tax year while unenrolled it's possible I'm not liable for payment, so would like to verify.
I have British and NZ citizenship, so I believe there are reciprocal health agreements in the cases of both. Am on a 444 visa, with an Australian spouse (which I believe potentially means I was considered an Aus tax resident immediately upon entry?).
Thank you for any clarity that can be brought to the matter.
