its a long story but essentially, last october (2025) i got a call from my university letting me know a person with my exact details (same name, birthday and TFN) had their tax agent contact the university to try unenrol. So, i tried to check myGOV and ATO accounts but it wouldnt log me in and was lagging so i figured i was scammed. i called the ATO assistance and originally they denied any identification that i was me and hung up on me, frustrating. I called again to another helpful ATO person and after 3 hours on the phone they realised I was not scammed, but me and another person with my name and birthday applied for a TFN around the same time, so they accidentally gave us the same TFN. The chances.

The ATO person said they would sort it out and send me a new TFN but it’s almost 6 months later and im looking for employment and need a TFN. I was able to apply for a new TFN in January but the website is still failing me and so I can’t register it. I have called again since and they refuse to help me access my account due to my failings to answer questions correctly based on info that I would only know via access to my account. It’s a cycle and conundrum. I am unable to resolve this due to the restrictive identification process and the ATO assistance continually denying that I AM ME - I don’t know what to do.

Firstly, I expect an ATO moderator from this Community will offer to assist you, offering a way for you to have a one-on-one conversation with someone who will take ownership of this situation through to its resolution. They're going to feel your pain too!

I also know the ATO has a robust complaints process, and I'd be triggering this in any case, @baker29 , given the difficulties you've endured. One of the steps is, of course, "Confirming your identity", so it might be interesting ...

And, given it's now been six months, @baker29 , and you find yourself involved in ongoing circular arguments with the ATO (we'll give you access to your account when you provide information from your account) it would not be unreasonable to skip the above step and instead directly approach the Tax Ombudsman.

Hi @baker29,

The first and most effective step is to lodge a formal complaint. This can be done without logging in. In the complaint, clearly state that:

  • we've issued a duplicate TFN
  • you can’t pass identity checks because the record itself is incorrect
  • are looking for employment and need your TFN
  • normal phone assistance has failed.

In the meantime, regarding work - you can start a job without a TFN. You can tell employers that there is an ATO administrative issue and that your TFN application is in progress. They may have to withhold tax at the highest rate temporarily, but that money is recoverable once your TFN issue is fixed.

We're always happy to help where we can, but speaking to our complaints team directly is the best option because they'll need personal details you can't share with us.
