I submitted my subclass 190 visa application and answered “No” to having any debt to the Australian Government.

At that time, I had received a message from the Australian Taxation Office (which i didnt realize as i hadnt check my gov app) about a pending amendment to my tax return, but no final amended assessment had been issued yet.

The next day, I paid the estimated amount of $1200 as soon as i saw the message in my gov app.

I want to understand:

Does a pending ATO amendment count as a “debt” at the time of application?

Now that I have paid the amount, do I need to notify immigration about this?

Could this affect my application or lead to refusal or cancellation?

Should I proactively update my application, or only respond if asked?

I can provide payment proof and dates if needed.

Not sure you will get a useful answer through this forum. Visa applications are not the purview of the ATO. The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for visas.

Hi @ayush225,

@Taxduck is correct, we can't provide advice on visa or immigration matters. You'll need to reach out to the Department of Home Affairs for help.

From a tax perspective, when we send you a letter about a pending amendment to your tax return, you don't have a formal debt until we issue an amended notice of assessment (NOA). Once we issue that notice, you'll receive it in your myGov inbox (if you have a myGov account linked to ATO online services) or by post. The notice will show any amount you owe us and the due date for payment.

You mentioned paying $1,200 after seeing the message in your myGov app. If this payment was made before the amended NOA was issued, it may have been an early payment based on the estimated amount shown in our letter. Once you receive the amended NOA, it will confirm the final amount owing and whether your payment has been applied.

You can check your current tax account balance and payment history through ATO online services via myGov.
