Based on what you've described, these courses helped you secure a better-paying job as a mechanic, which means they relate to getting new employment rather than maintaining or improving skills for your current role at the time you incurred the expenses.
To claim a deduction for self-education expenses, you must show there's a close connection between the course and your work activities at the time you incur the expenses. You can claim if either:
- the course maintained or improved a skill or specific knowledge required for your then current work activities, or
- you could show that the course was leading to, or was likely to lead to, increased income from your then current work activities.
