We have a ABN that has been inactive for 20 years but is still registered. We do not have access to who set the entity up. Each year we are being sent NFP self-reviews to lodge but we can not access anyway to lodge or cancel the ABN. How can you cancel an ABN without knowing who the authorised contact person is.

Hi @cathynp,

You can cancel the ABN without access to the original authorised contact person. Where prior associates are unknown or uncontactable, a newly appointed associate can notify us of their appointment and make changes on behalf of the organisation.

You'll need to complete the Change of registration details (NAT 2943) paper form and post it to us with evidence of your approved nomination. The form states that only an authorised contact can complete it, but we'll accept the form from a newly appointed contact if you provide evidence of your approved nomination. This evidence can include meeting minutes or notification from your committee or board that reflects your appointment.

Once your details are updated as the new authorised contact, you can cancel the ABN through ABR online services or by contacting the Australian Business Register directly. Make sure all lodgments, payments and reporting obligations are up to date before cancelling the ABN.

Download the Change of registration details form (NAT 2943) from the Notifying us of changes to your not-for-profit page, complete it with evidence of your appointment, and post it to us. Once processed, you'll be able to cancel the ABN and resolve the NFP self-review lodgment requirement.
