I have been living overseas since June 2024. I have not lodged my tax return for FY2023/24, because I am in Russia and the country is under financial and political sanctions from the Western countries. That means the following: I cannot call ATO, I can neither send money to Australia, nor receive it from there, Facebook and other Western social media are prohibited, and other difficulties. I tried to find ways to contact ATO several times over the last 2 years, but could not.

My registered address on record with ATO in Australia is my parents’ place. This week my parents received a letter from ATO where the tax officials say that they might start legal actions against me if I do not lodge a tax return or contact them. I sincerely want to contact ATO, but how? The only way to do it is a phone call. Could anyone tell me how I can get this message to ATO? I have only email to communicate...

Hi @Cat888,

You can write to us, which may be the most practical option for you. We recognise that calling from Russia presents challenges due to sanctions and access restrictions.

You could also consider lodging a complaints webform online. Just note this may take longer to process, but it's still a valid way to let us know what's happening.

For lodging your tax return from overseas, the easiest method is to lodge online using myTax through your myGov account. You'll need to update your myGov sign-in settings to ensure you have access from overseas. We recommend using a Digital ID, such as myID. You'll also need an Australian bank account to receive any refund amounts.

If you can't access online services, you can lodge a paper tax return and mail it to us. Other options included engaging with a registered tax agent in Australia to lodge on your return. Alternatively, a friend or family member can also lodge your tax return on your behalf if you complete a power of attorney for them to sign the return.
