I just finished up a theatre production that generated a profit. I've been asked to invoice the company for payment but I do not have an ABN as I'm not a professional actor (this is likely a one-off). Presumably I'd still need to declare the income on my tax return but would it be necessary to apply for an ABN if this wasn't going to be a regular source of income?

I have managed theatre and music events for years. If you are not a professional, you can use the "Statement by a Supplier Not Quoting and ABN" form and claim it as hobby/not undertaking a business. You do not include it on your tax return.

"The supplier is an individual and has given the payer a

written statement to the effect that the supply is either:

made in the course or furtherance of an activity done

as a private recreational pursuit or hobby,"
