I just finished up a theatre production that generated a profit. I've been asked to invoice the company for payment but I do not have an ABN as I'm not a professional actor (this is likely a one-off). Presumably I'd still need to declare the income on my tax return but would it be necessary to apply for an ABN if this wasn't going to be a regular source of income?

If you aren't entitled to an ABN you can provide a statement by a supplier form with your invoice. See below
Statement by a supplier not quoting an ABN | Australian Taxation Office
Note from the link
"If the payer has reasonable grounds to believe that the statement the supplier makes is false or misleading, they are required to withhold 47% (from 1 July 2017) from the total payment for the supply."
I have managed theatre and music events for years. If you are not a professional, you can use the "Statement by a Supplier Not Quoting and ABN" form and claim it as hobby/not undertaking a business. You do not include it on your tax return.
"The supplier is an individual and has given the payer a
written statement to the effect that the supply is either:
made in the course or furtherance of an activity done
as a private recreational pursuit or hobby,"
