I am now receiving an Income stream from Bulgaria. This income stream is tax-free in Bulgaria which is both "Defined benefit" superannuation scheme and a personal income stream which is paid from a fund that collects compulsory employee contributions from the income in Australia and Bulgaria. Both the "Defined benefit" and personal income stream are pooled together.

Do I need to declare the Bulgarian Super income stream payments in my tax return here in Australia?

Hi @Antlez,

Yes, you need to declare your Bulgarian pension income in your Australian tax return if you're an Australian resident for tax purposes. Australian residents must declare their worldwide income, including foreign pensions and superannuation income streams.

When you declare your foreign pension, you may be able to claim a deduction depending on where the income is coming from. This will reduce the taxable amount of your foreign pension income.

The income should be declared in the foreign income sections of your return, and any foreign tax offsets or deductions available will help reduce the final tax payable on this income.

You can check your residency status using our online tool to confirm you're an Australian resident for tax purposes. You should also review the information about foreign and worldwide income on our website to understand how to correctly declare your Bulgarian pension payments and what deductions or offsets may apply to your situation.
