As Above but I have a HELP debt in Australia - So do I have to lodge a return in Australia? from reading the website I do but... when i imput my USA income it seems to want me to pay extra tax in Australia as well as paying back HELP. I am confused

I understand that USA has an agreement so that I shouldnt have to pay tax in both places but unsure how to lodge so that I meet HELP payment requirements without paying extra tax in Australia.

Can anyone advise?

Regardless of your tax residency, you would need to lodge a tax return to determine your compulsory repayment

Assuming you are non-resident, the correct the non-resident foreign income section rather than foreign income section. If you don't see it, then you personalised the tax return incorrectly.

"At Personalise return, you don’t need to make a selection to show the non-resident foreign income section as it's always displayed at Prepare return when:

  • you have a HELP, VSL or AASL debt, and
  • your answer to the question Were you an Australian resident for tax purposes from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025? is No."
