Hi ATO community,

I am dual citizen Sri Lankan/Australian.

After living/working in Australia since mid 90s (took my Australian citizenship in 1997), I had to move to Sri Lanka (temporarily) in 2018 to look after my elderly parents. Since my mother's passing away in 2023, now I am the guardian of my father who is 90 years old. Due to inactivity my Superannuation is now transferred to ATO (I am able to check via "mygov" web account) and I am eligible to take it as a lump sum or a super pension from May 2026 (I have reached 60 years). Also during this time my only Australian bank account is closed due to inactivity (hence I have no way to transfer my funds from ATO to a bank in Australia). Now I have only a Sri Lankan Bank account but ATO doesn't allow me to add it as it involves a SWIFT CODE. Is there any other way that I could get the funds (least a portion) transferred to Sri Lanka? Highly appreciate your help.

Hi @Mara7,

We currently don't support international bank transfers for superannuation payments.

Here are some options to work around the closed bank account:

  1. Open a new Australian bank account before you apply to access your super - many Australian banks allow you to open accounts online, even while you're overseas.
  2. Transfer your ATO-held super to an eligible Australian super fund that accepts international transfers, then arrange payment once you're eligible to access it.

You’ll need to do some research to find a suitable super fund and confirm they can facilitate international transfers to Sri Lanka. Different funds have different capabilities for overseas payments. The fund you choose must be active and accept government rollovers.

Hi  RachelATO, I highly appreciate your response in relation to my query. I will try and reopen my ING account (after providing my Australian Passport details) or try to open a brand new Australian Bank account. Thanks again for your help  RachelATO.
