Hi everyone,

I became an Australian permanent resident and tax resident on 26 July 2025 after immigrating from Hong Kong. I am less than 60 years old and currently have no superannuation balance in Australia.

I would like to make personal deductible (concessional) contributions in the 2025–26 financial year to offset realised capital gains and part-time employment income.

My question is:

Am I eligible to use the carry-forward concessional contributions rule?

That is, can I access any unused concessional contribution cap from the previous 5 financial years (even though I was not an Australian tax resident and had no super fund during those years)?

I understand the rule requires Total Super Balance < $500,000 at 30 June 2025. Since I had $0 at that time, I assume I qualify, but I would like to confirm.

Any official confirmation or experience from other new migrants would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi @Mikekwok,

I'm not sure if my word will also be enough for you, but yes, you have read / interpreted the ATO webpage correctly.

'You can carry forward unused cap amounts from up to 5 previous financial years, including when you were not a member of a super fund.' 👌

Hi @Mikekwok,

Yes, you're eligible to use the carry-forward concessional contributions rule for the 2025–26 financial year. The rule allows you to carry forward unused cap amounts from up to 5 previous financial years, including years when you weren't a member of a super fund. You can access unused amounts from 2020–21 onwards, even though you weren't an Australian tax resident during those years.

For the years before you became an Australian resident, the full concessional contributions cap for each year would be considered unused and available to carry forward.

You can check your available carry-forward contribution amounts through ATO online services. Log in and select 'Super' > 'Information' > 'Carry forward concessional contributions'. This will show you the exact unused amounts you can access. You can also use this to confirm your total superannuation balance as recorded by us.
