Hi all,
one of acquaintances, who is very old, had a couple of questions about their tax returns. I thought I would post them here with the hope someone could help answer them for the person, who doesn't know about this very capable community!
"I am 76 year old. In early 1990s, I was working in Saudi Arabia, and along with my family, got the Australian Permanent Residency. In 1996, all of us registered our first entry & exit into Australia. I was still working in Saudi Arabia and was the sole bread-winner for the family. In 2009, my family settled in Australia, while I remained in Saudi Arabia, working with my Saudi employer. My wife got a job in Australia that year. For some reason, although I was living permanently and earning in Saudi Arabia, I too started paying taxes in Australia (considering that if my wife is working in Australia, I should also be paying taxes in Australia!). I continued working in Saudi Arabia, maintained my residence there until my retirement in 2021. Meanwhile, each year, I would visit my family in Australia for 3 weeks or so, and return to my job in Saudi Arabia. I also continued paying the taxes in Australia regularly between 2009 - 2021. However, now that I have been living in Australia since 2021, I have come to know of local regulations in a better way. People have told me that I was not a tax resident of Australia for the time period of 2009 - 2021, and should not have paid taxes. Could someone please guide me if I have been correct in paying the taxes, or was I wrong? If latter, what could be done about the taxes filed/paid? Thank you.
