Since leaving Australia and moving back to Ireland in mid/late 2025, my Australian visa has since expired. I’m now unable to increase my identity strength in the myID app beyond Basic.


I can upload one accepted document, such as my Australian driver licence, but I’m unable to provide a second accepted document because my visa is no longer active and I’m not an Australian citizen.


As a result, I don’t appear to have the required myID identity strength to access ATO online services. This is an issue because I will need to lodge an Australian tax return once the lodgement window opens, and I will also be due a refund.


What are the options for accessing ATO online services or lodging my tax return if my myID identity strength is stuck at Basic?


I’ve been trying to find a solution for the past couple of weeks but haven’t been able to resolve it.

Where your myID identity strength is stuck at Basic, you won't be able to access ATO online services through myGov. To access ATO online services, you need to establish at least a Standard identity strength in myID.


If you can't increase your identity strength in myID because your visa has expired and you're not an Australian citizen, you have two options for lodging your tax return:

While you're overseas, you can contact our overseas enquiry line or write to us if you need assistance with lodgment or accessing your account.
